There's a House Burning Next Door

AAMUnite Co-Director Helena Berbano's take on the difficulties of wanting and being an ally, and the sometimes unbearable burden of being labeled a model minority.  Follow her at @helenaberbano. #API4BlackLives

There's a house burning next door

There's a house burning next door
And it's getting harder and harder to ignore
The smoke fills and fills
And I succumb to the chills
Of fear

Me
Confront I
This reflection is testing and testing
A, B, C, D...
'F' this

I can't help but think
It could be me
Next on the hit list of 'the supremacy'
After all, there is no clemency
Just chains

I stare across the way
And there is a house on fire
And I don't know how to act
So little privilege is a burden on my back

On the other side stands an ivory tower
Equipped with everything from
Domination to power
And I can't help but feel sour
And helpless

This wouldn't be happening
If I could care less

I stare across the way
And there is a house on fire
And I don't know how to act
So little privilege is a burden on my back

My house is crumbling too
But I know I can make do
A, B, C, D
Fear is a fact
But I know that I must act

I falter and stumble
But I will not let that house crumble
Hand on the hose
Please ignore all my prose

There's a house burning next door
And it's getting harder and harder to ignore
And I know that I must act
